With the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras festival in February, MetLife's Data Governance Lead and GLAM network leader, Lisa Zavaroni, explains how MetLife's support of LGBTQI+ staff doesn’t end after the parade.

What is the GLAM Network?

GLAM is our pride network and stands for the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Associates Alliance of MetLife.

How is MetLife celebrating the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras in 2020?

The LGBTQI+ community is a family. MetLife is part of Park Street Pride, which is a group of Pride leaders from several businesses residing at 2 Park Street, Sydney. This year QBE is hosting the party and we have all contributed to the event. We’ve invited everyone from our businesses to show their support for the LGBTQI+ community and raise funds for indigenous rainbow youth – this is what it matters to us.

What's the theme for this year's Mardi Gras?

This year's theme is 'What Matters?' What matters to me is:

  • Acknowledgement of the First Nations land we meet on
  • LGBTQI+ rights and our right to live in a truly inclusive society, free from fear and discrimination
  • Affirming trans and gender diverse identities
  • Shining a spotlight and supporting our Asia-Pacific rainbow family.

How is GLAM active at MetLife?

MetLife GLAM supports and acknowledges multiple LGBTQI+ events throughout the year including Wear it Purple, World Pride, Trans Awareness and Red Ribbon. And because we are such a loving and supporting community, we team up with other businesses in our Park Street Office as Park Street PRIDE, which is made up of MetLife, QBE, Citi, RBC, Unilever, Turks Legal, Amazon and Colin Biggers & Paisley.

Every year we combine our creative forces to celebrate Pride events together, as a family.

Globally, MetLife's GLAM network sponsors the Pride Parade in NY and holds events across all its offices.

How does MetLife encourage staff to bring their whole selves to work?

At MetLife we understand the power of human difference. That's why Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) is an essential part of our mission to become One MetLife.

MetLife embraces its diversity and has focused on specific streams being LGBTQI+ Pride, Cultural Diversity and Gender Equality. By cultivating an inclusive work environment across our offices in nearly 50 countries, we believe our employees are able to bring their authentic selves to work and thrive.

What other GLAM initiatives are you working on?

MetLife is now part of Inter-Insurance Pride, which is a network for LGBTQI+ employees (and allies) of the insurance industry who meet to collaborate on improving outcomes for employees, customers and our community.

By working together, we believe we can improve the effectiveness of our LGBTQI+ networks, deliver consistency across our industry for a better and more inclusive customer experience for the LGBTQI+ community.
