Like all Australians, MetLife has been shocked and saddened by the severity and scale of the bushfires currently affecting several Australia states. The number of deaths and the extent of damage to large areas is unprecedented in Australian history, and for those wishing to make claims, MetLife has implemented the following to assist those in this time of great need.
For those members in bushfire affected areas who have current claims lodged with MetLife and who are unable to access supporting information, we will minimise the need for ongoing claim requirements, or waive these requirements. This will include:
Processing of Income Protection claim payments without the need for additional requirements
In certain instances, waiving outstanding claim requirements for a period of time
For those members in bushfire affected areas wishing to lodge new claims, MetLife will implement the following:
MetLife will waive the need for a death certificate where MetLife is satisfied that there is other evidence confirming the death.
Terminal Illness Claims
MetLife will waive the 2nd medical certification where the 1st medical certification is accompanied by clinical and/or hospital records of the illness.
TPD and Income Protection Claims
Each case will be considered on its own merits, and where it is found that documentation/records are no longer available due to the bushfires, MetLife will waive these requirements.
For Income Protection claims, we will waive the Waiting Period and make benefit payments during the Waiting Period. Once the Waiting Period has been exhausted, we will continue to assess and consider each case on its own merits and waive ongoing requirements where able.
This approach to bushfire affected claimants will be in place from 1 January 2020 to 30 April 2020, unless MetLife agrees to extend the duration due to ongoing bushfire activity.
