INSURANCE
At MetLife, we believe everyone should be treated with respect and without judgement or identity-based discrimination. And we want to help you feel confident applying for Life insurance if you are HIV positive.
To give you a better idea of the process and questions we will ask, we've outlined key considerations if you're HIV positive and considering life insurance.
It's important to know that at no point will we ask questions about your sexual preferences or practices. We do not attempt to determine your risk of contracting a sexually transmitted infection (STI), including Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), as part of our underwriting assessment.
If you'd like to discuss with our trained staff, call us to get support throughout the application process.
Can I apply for Life insurance if I’m HIV positive?
Yes, you may apply for life insurance.
MetLife will assess your application in accordance with the life insurance code of practice, and with consideration to your own unique health and circumstances.
As part of this code:
- We treat any disclosure of a history of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), other sexually transmitted infections (STI), or Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) confidentially and with respect
- We want to ensure you feel comfortable and not judged or discriminated against throughout our applications process
- We only ask appropriate questions.

Will I be covered if I become HIV positive in the future?
Our products do not contain any in-built exclusions for HIV or AIDS.
What information do I need to provide?
It is part of the underwriting process for insurers to ask about your:
- health and medical history
- occupation, employment status and income details
- pastimes, if they are risky or dangerous
- habits, including smoking and drinking history
- travel and residency status.
If you disclose that you are HIV positive, we will ask you for more information, including your:
- current treatment plan (e.g. antiretroviral therapy and regular follow up and monitoring)
- treating doctor(s) details
- recent blood test results including viral load and CD4 count.
We will also request a medical report from your treating doctor to obtain information around your treatment plan. To release this information to us, you will need to sign a medical evidence authority form.
We will provide you a medical authority form during our online application, or you can request a paper copy.
How will I be informed of the final decision?
We take all reasonable steps to get the medical information needed to offer an evidence-based assessment of your application.
Once the process is completed, our underwriting team will:
- call you, your adviser or representative if you have given us permission to do so
- confirm if cover can be offered, and if so, on what terms
- send the decision in writing.
